CO-OP

Cooperative education (or co-operative education) is a structured method of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience. A cooperative education experience, commonly known as a “co-op”, provides academic credit for structured job experience.

CRPD

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international human rights treaty of the United Nations intended to protect the rights and dignity of people with disabilities.

DAY PROGRAMS

Adult day programs are social services designed to care for adults with intellectual disability. These are essentially supervised day care programs designed for recreational, social, educational and behavioral skills training for individuals with intellectual disability.

EA

Employment agencies (EA) refer to third party agencies. These services are designed to as recruiting programs to aid candidates find employment opportunities.

EMPLOYMENT

Employment is defined as jobs that: a) have full parity with other jobs within the workplace in terms of how people are hired, supervised, and compensated; b) where the person who has a disability has opportunities to interact with coworkers; and c) where that person can access job advancement and career opportunities. This may also include self-employment but DOES NOT include unpaid volunteer work or internships, sheltered workshops , courses, or training.

EMPLOYMENT FIRST

Employment First is an initiative advocating for systemic change that prioritizes competitive inclusive employment for people with disability, before any other non-employment options. It promotes Competitive Inclusive Employment in the open-labour market that provides competitive wages and similar benefits to all employees, regardless of ability.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

Employment and social services provide employment supports. These may include job training as well as any social services needed.

FAMILY

Family is defined as two or more people living together or apart, related by blood, marriage, adoption, or a commitment to support one another, regardless of gender identification. Families are unique and diverse and can only be defined by the ties of love and caring that exist among members.

IEP

The Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is a plan or program developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services.

INCLUSION

Inclusion philosophy rests on the idea that every individual, regardless of his/her disabilities, has the right to be incorporated fully into the fabric of society.

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

All students attend and are welcomed into their schools in age-appropriate, regular classes and are supported to learn, contribute and participate in all school life aspects.

INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY

Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem solving) and in adaptive behavior, which covers a range of everyday social and practical skills.

MRD

Short for motivated, reliable, dependable (MRD). The requirements for candidates in order for employers to considered them for employment.

MTCU

The Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU) is the ministry of the government of Ontario responsible for administration of laws relating to post-secondary education and skills training.

ODSP

The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) is one of Ontario’s social assistance programs. ODSP provides income and employment supports to eligible Ontario residents who have disabilities.

PASSPORTS

Passport is a funding program that helps adults 18 years or older with a developmental disability to participate in their communities.

SHELTERED WORKSHOPS

The term sheltered workshop refers to an organization or environment that employs people with disabilities separately from others. The workshops were created as temporary places where people with disabilities would learn job skills.

SOCIAL CAPITAL

Social capital refers to the network parents or their young adults will make during school, employment and relationships in the community. The more people families connect with, the more success they will find when looking for job opportunities and placements.

SOFT SKILLS

These are skills not directly taught, but learned through experience. Small things that are usually second nature, like hygiene, how to act appropriately in social settings as well as presentability. All the skills needed to show employers they are professional and able to do their job without any distractions. They are also known as Social Competence.

SUBSIDIES

Wage subsidies and other assistance programs to help you hire the right employees for your business. These assistance programs cover are used to cover the costs for employers when hiring someone with an intellectual disability. These costs can include services like job training or supports.

THIRD PARTY AGENCY

Third party agencies are employment services that are organizations that assist and find job placements for candidates at other companies other than their own. These jobs could be part-time, full-time or temporary opportunities.
